The Desert Aire Owners Association (DAOA) sets requirements for fencing, landscaping, retaining walls, and property maintenance.
Fences, decks, and retaining walls require Architectural Committee review before construction. For landscaping or excavation, confirm the requirements that apply to your lot and the work you plan to do.
Your project needs to be reviewed against the rules for your lot. Confirm the plans, materials, and required approvals with the Architectural Committee before construction.

DAOA Fencing Rules
Height Limits
- •Front yard (see-through): Max 48 inches (chain link, split-rail)
- •Front yard (solid): Max 42 inches (wood, vinyl privacy)
- •Sides and back: Max 72 inches (approved materials)
- •Hedges (front): Max 72 inches
These limits have exceptions for certain lot layouts and neighboring structures. Confirm the requirements for your design with DAOA.
Approved Materials
- Wood designed for residential fencing
- Chain link (galvanized or vinyl-coated)
- Vinyl (residential-grade privacy or picket)
- Barbed wire, chicken wire, agricultural fencing
- Temporary plastic construction fencing
Before construction: Fences require Architectural Committee approval. Confirm the plot plan, materials, height, and any exceptions for your lot in the current DAOA architectural regulations.
DAOA Landscaping Requirements
- 1-year deadline: Landscaping must be completed within one year of structure completion. Discuss extensions or reapplication with the committee and county.
- Vegetation preservation: Natural vegetation must be preserved OR replaced with shrubs, lawns, trees
- Gravel and rock: Decorative rock and gravel are permitted
- Elevation verification required: No excavation or topsoil removal without Architectural Committee approval
New Construction in Desert Aire?
The general deadline for initial landscaping is one year after structure completion. Discuss an extension with the committee and county if needed.
Property Maintenance and Fines
What DAOA Requires
- Grass and weeds cut regularly
- Tumbleweeds cleared and removed
- Noxious weeds eradicated
- Shrubbery pruned, dead plants removed
- Fences, decks, driveways maintained in good repair
Violation Penalties
- •Up to $50 per day, per violation (each day is a separate violation)
- •18% annual interest on fines unpaid for 30 days after assessment
- •Property lien can be filed for unpaid penalties
- •Legal action to recover costs and attorney fees

Retaining Walls and Structures
- Walls over 4 feet: Must meet all state and local building/safety codes
- Finished exterior surface required: Ecology blocks and tall retaining walls must have a maintained, finished appearance
- Safety barriers near common areas: 4-foot barrier required to protect people from drop-offs
- Architectural approval required: All retaining walls need committee approval before construction
Retaining walls require a review of the slope, drainage, wall height, and nearby structures. Confirm the engineering, permit, and DAOA approval requirements for your project.
Vacation Home? We've Got You Covered
Desert Aire is home to hundreds of vacation properties. If you live somewhere else and own property here, DAOA still expects your yard to be maintained. The association may assess penalties of up to $50 per day per violation, including while you are away.

Mowing, weed control, cleanup, and irrigation needs can be part of your maintenance plan. Confirm the tasks and visit frequency for your property.
